Famous Stories Behind the Facades: Úvoz and Jánský vršek in the 20th Century

On this walk, you’ll learn how Úvoz and Jánský vršek changed, especially during the First Republic. For example, international (Bauhaus) style blended unobtrusively into the historic architecture, and we’ll show you how modern architecture continues to blend in unobtrusively even today. Along the way, we’ll share stories of famous figures from the First Republic, such as Hana Benešová, Jan Masaryk, his siblings and his American girlfriend, or Milena Jesenská, and you’ll learn where these people lived. The second major group of famous figures associated with these places consists of 20th-century artists—the painter Jan Slavíček, the poets Milan Koch and Václav Hrabě, Egon Bondy, and actors such as Zita Kabátová, Jan Koubková, and Jiří Wimmer. Our tour will be guided by the theme of the Lesser Town courtyards, an art event in public space that made its way into painting textbooks and was thwarted by the secret police in the 80s.
