Stories of Houses and People from Újezd Gate to Anděl

On the walk you will learn where the Újezdská Gate used to be and what it looked like, the real story of the WWII Liberator tank on Kinský Square, we will learn what was in front of the Palace of Justice and where the Eggenberg Inn and the former theatre Arena used to be. We will discuss the history of the Švandovo Theatre and on Arbes Square we will see where Czech writer Jakub Arbes lived, where the Church of St. Philip and Jacob used to be and how it influenced the events on the square for centuries. We will also see where the famous Slavata Garden used to be and how many times the Bear Fountain moved around Smíchov. We will go to Children's Island and discuss the history of the 19th century fabric factories and the construction of the embankment. At Dientzenhofer Gardens we will see where the famous baroque pavilion used to stand and what it looked like, and learn about the former botanical gardens. On 14 October Square, we will remember the most important Art Nouveau buildings, the National House and the Market Hall. We will pass by the St. Wenceslas Basilica and end our walk at the Portheimka - the history of the Dientzenhofer family and also the Portheim family, owners of the fabric factories.
